Youth Rally to End Fossil Fuel Reliance

350 NH Youth Team organized rally to discuss and demand the end of fossil fuel reliance in New Hampshire

Nashua, NH -- New Hampshire youth are calling on elected officials and council to stop the approval of new fossil fuel projects. The expansion of the fossil fuel industry heightens the catastrophe of the climate crisis that youth will be paying the price for.

“Most of the citizens that live close to the proposed asphalt plant site are impoverished or members of minority groups,” says Youth Team Recruitment Lead Taylor Barry. “Therefore, constructing the asphalt plant downtown would be a form of environmental injustice. Unfortunately, injustices like these happen much too often. By raising our voices against the proposed asphalt plant, we can help bring attention to environmental injustices everywhere.”

Over the course of the past year, the 350 New Hampshire Youth Team has been involved in preventing the building of the proposed asphalt plant in residential Nashua. The plant is a hazard for the community in terms of air pollution, noise pollution, health hazards, and the potential to lower property values. The 350 New Hampshire youth team is calling for

  1. The Nashua planning board to vote “NO” on the Newport Construction Company’s proposal of the plant.

  2. Elected Officials to be working with their communities to transition fossil fuel infrastructure into renewable energy sources, including the coal plant in Bow.

“I've seen, firsthand, the detrimental effects that the coal plant has had in my hometown, Bow, and I refuse to let Nashua experience a similar fate. We cannot afford to go backwards by allowing this Asphalt Plant to be built. The health and wellbeing of the people and land of Nashua must be prioritized.” says Youth Team Media Lead Preesha Chaterjee.

The final vote is scheduled to take place on June 15, 2023 at Nashua City Hall. This event is just one step in climate justice for New Hampshire and the movement towards ending the era of fossil fuels. The Youth Team and volunteers will continue to fight for climate justice and a transition to renewable energy infrastructure and alternatives.
